We start our guided tour of the main building of Wrocław University in front of the blue door of the University. If this gate impresses you, be prepared for what awaits you inside – it’s a real wonder!
This is a private tour of Wrocław University, and is a great experience for the art and history lovers! We will dive into the beautiful Baroque art, and the intriguing history that has influenced it.
We will enter the university museum, located in the most important building of the university. Its interior was decorated in a marked Baroque style under the order of Emperor Leopold I of Bohemia. The main intention was to create a school dedicated to philosophy and Catholic theology. For an hour we will visit the beautiful interior of this impressive building, stopping at the various works of art that decorate the halls and corridors.
On the tour we will detail the importance of the institution for the Austrian legacy, the Jesuit College, and the Counter-Reformation.
This guided tour of Wrocław University will give you an understanding of the spiritual battle in Wrocław between the Catholics and Protestants. We will understand the importance for the establishment of the university by the Habsburgs and Jesuits in their efforts to bring the Counter-Reformation to our region of Silesia. Along the way the guide will teach you how the Protestants tried to fight the Jesuits for the creation of the university, and how the Prussian invasion added to this ongoing battle.
The guided tour will also take us through the Oratorium Marianum, known today as the Music Hall. A very special room that served as a chapel for the Jesuit priests and students when it first opened. Its completely recreated interior will gives us a glimpse into the teachings of the Jesuits, and the importance of the Catholic veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Next we will take a walk up the Imperial Staircase, an iconic feature of the Habsburg Baroque. It gives us an insight into the region of Silesia with its beautiful fresco plafonds, as well as noticing curious hidden objects in the walls.
We will, of course, then visit the Leopold Hall, known as the Aula Leopoldina. It is the largest and most original hall in the entire building, still maintaining its elaborate 18th century artwork. This place is a jewel for Poland, as it is the only secular Baroque space that the country preserves in such a good condition – the illusionist paintings, its decorations, frescoes, and sculptures will enchant you!
At the end of our guided tour of Wrocław University we will stand on Mathematical Tower. From here we will get to see an incredible view of Wrocław’s old town and the Odra River.
