This is the only tour through Wrocław’s history you’ll need! We’ll go on an unforgettable and fascinating journey through the more than 1,000 years of Wrocław‘s history. We will discover the interesting diversity of our great city, with its mixed legacy of Polish, Czech, Austrian, Germanic, and French influences. We will discover the most important sights of our city, such as the old Town Hall, the Market Square, the 300 year-old Baroque University building, our local Market Hall, as well as Sand and Cathedral Islands with the grandiose Wrocław Cathedral.
During our tour through the history of Wrocław we will tell the funny stories and quirky legends that are hiding behind each building: a war over beer, arguments between the church and the city authorities, and fights between dukes and bishops. We will discover the strange medieval world of Wrocław and how its inhabitants have shaped Central Europe. We’ll talk about how people used to live here, how they were punished for crimes, and the spiritual battles that took place between the competing religious leaders.
As we walk through the old town of Wrocław, we’ll see many beautiful buildings, and talk about the turbulent history. You’ll hear about the many artistic and architectural influences in our city from Gothic to Baroque, from traditional to modern. In Wrocław every building has its own story, every street its own soul, and we’ll take you through the best of it.
Along the way we will also find many of the gnome statues that make our city so special, and you will learn about why Wrocław is known as the “City of Gnomes.” We’ll talk about the history of these small figures, where they came from, and why they are so important to our city.
We’ll see every major historical site in the old town, talking about each locations history and the captivating figures involved. Starting on the market square in the heart of the old town, we’ll take a walk around to see the beautiful buildings, including the iconic Wrocław old town hall. We’ll see the imposing main building of Wrocław University with it’s elaborate Baroque decorations.
Then we’ll head to the Market Hall, with its mesmerizing, parabolic architecture. While there we’ll take a short break before continuing across the bridge over the Odra River to Sand Island, with its picturesque views of Cathedral Island. Lastly we will cross the river again into the heart of the religious center of the city, Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski), where we will feel a completely different atmosphere in our “Little Vatican.” We’ll conclude in front of the breathtaking Wrocław Cathedral.
