Treblinka Death Camp Tour from Warsaw

4.5(2)on Tripadvisor

Overview

This historical tour begins in Warsaw, near the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. From there we travel northeast from the Polish capital, and after about 1.5 hours we arrive at the quiet forests where the former Nazi death camp Treblinka II once operated. Today the area is a powerful memorial commemorating one of the most tragic chapters of World War II and the Holocaust.During the visit we explore the Treblinka II Memorial, where you will learn about Operation Reinhard, the deadliest phase of the Nazi “Final Solution.”

Walking along the symbolic path that represents the railway ramp where deportation trains once arrived, we reach the main monument dedicated to the approximately 800,000 victims who were murdered in Treblinka. At the memorial site you will see the large cracked granite monument, symbolizing the destruction of the camp, as well as hundreds of commemorative stones representing Jewish communities that were wiped out during the Holocaust.

Throughout the tour we discuss the stories of prisoners, survivors, and perpetrators, including the infamous guard known as “Ivan the Terrible,” whose brutality became widely known in postwar investigations and documentaries. We will also talk about the prisoners’ uprising of August 1943, a heroic act of resistance that contributed to the closure of the camp and led the Nazis to attempt to erase all traces of their crimes. After visiting the Treblinka II memorial, we begin the return journey to Warsaw, stopping for about one hour in a nearby village, where you will have free time for lunch before continuing back to the city.
